500 0 _aBack in 1925 when the Department's predecessor, the New South Wales Main Roads Board, there were only 121,000 motor vehicles registered in the State. The growth of road transport is such that in 1962 some 1,200,000 vehicles were registered in New South Wales. In addition, the average distance travelled by each vehicle is much greater than in 1925. The tempo of increase in road traffic since 1925 has created an increasing demand for roads with dust-free surfaces of bitumen or cement concrete. In 1925 there were 12,840 miles of main roads in New South Wales, road surfaces were almost entirely of earth, gravel, or broken stone. Dust-less surfaces were confined to a mere 200 miles mostly in and near Sydney and Newcastle. By 1962 dust-less surfaces had increased to 9,500 miles and they are currently being extended by some 600 miles each year.
