One of the new "Islands" in the Bass Strait is called Barracoota. Bass and Flinders would have wondered at this strange, tubular geography. It is not an island of rock like the hundred of other islands that dot the Strait, it is an island of steel, about 2000 tons of it standing in 46 metres of water 25kms offshore. Like other Bass Strait islands it supports life, the life of the men who live and work in its air-conditioned comfort.
