Greater precision, greater production, less waste, less need for machine, less downtime. These are important requirements which must be met to overcome higher costs and more intense competition. The firm Erie manufacture a whole family of forging presses which are designed to meet these and other modern manufacturing requirements. One of their presses, which produces precision parts for a major manufacturer of jet engines, is the largest mechanical forging press ever built, capable of applying the weight of an ocean liner every two seconds to a forging surface the size of a small room or, the energy of a 4000lb automobile crashing into an immovable object at 150mph.
