There was a time when Allerhiece was a boom town serving the Bearhaven copper mines in the hills above. A century and a half later, it comes to life only on Sunday mornings. Allerhiece provides the basic amenities of church, pub, and general store with a scattered population of Kilamarna parish at the end of the Beara Peninsula. It's a parish which sociologists have singled out before now as a classic example of the decline and decay of rural communities in Western Ireland.
