This is chamois country. These mountains lie on the fringe of New Zealand's Southern Alps. This is a harsh rugged land of bare peaks and jagged ridges, blazing hot in summer, drenched with snow in winter. The alpine grassland sweeps down to the treeline where deep forest spreads into the river valleys. Yet harsh as this country is, it is the home of one of New Zealand's most interesting animals, the chamois. Graceful, sure-footed, shy- they're highly prized for their skins.
