This is the first of two programmes on the transformer core case study. The transformer in the case study is the large transformer at a power station which converts the electricity generated there to the very high voltages required on the national grid. In essence a transformer is a large chunk of steel with some coils wrapped around it. It is the efficiency of the core which determines the efficiency of the total transformer and making the core efficient is a real materials problem.
