The Gulf region of Papua New Guinea is only 400kms from the tip of Cape York yet nothing in Australia's tropical north compares with this lush wilderness. Here, mangroves dominate the entire coastal landscape. They hug the banks of every river in the Gulf, rivers that are eight times the size of Australia's Murray. These trees thrive in the tropical climate. It is so wet here that ten days without rain is a drought. Deep within its snaking muddy waterways and trackless swamp, the village of Bimuru stands out as one of few developed outposts. It is here that John Bunt and his colleagues from the Australian Institute of Marine Science have set up a base for their study.
