The history of the exploration of New Guinea is the story of men from the twentieth century meeting men from the stone age. For the people of New Guinea before the coming of the white man knew nothing of the wheel and nothing of metal. Their men had the reputation of being the toughest and bravest warriors in the whole of the Pacific and when they went out to meet the white invaders of their tribal lands, they went armed with spears and arrows, and stone axes.
