The machine as Leonardo da Vinci realised 500 years ago can grow from its child-like origins to become man's slave but like the slave the machine can grow strong. It has the potential power to dominate, constrict or to expand man's own environment. We are still unsure who will emerge as master, man or machine? The machine has changed the pace of every Western nation more than any other of man's artefacts. Remove the electric razor, the motorcar, the powerhouse, the jukebox, the rocket warhead, the stephoscope and what we know as twentieth-century civilization will cease to exist. Motorways will become dust tracks, cities will become hamlets.
