The earth seen whole is a compelling reminder of the need to safeguard our earthly resources; soil and the land, food and fibre, the forests, the rivers, the lakes, the seas, the oceans, minerals. We are ever more aware that man's future on earth depends on how well he conserves his earthly heritage. We need better ways to inventory and monitor our resources and to learn more about them. Photography from an orbiting satellite can provide the information we need at a cost we can afford. The Gemini and Apollo programs provided the first earth images useful in studying the planet's resources. These experiments have led to the development to an unmanned satellite system for surveying earth resources from space.
