The Franklin River flows 125km through some the most rugged wilderness in Australia. It has carved some of Tasmania's deepest gorges and in all its length, it is only crossed in one place by a road. With the rainfall amongst the highest in Australia, the southwest is seen as the ideal site for future hydroelectric development. A wilderness that for millions of years has remained unchanged may soon be developed. The current proposals to develope the remaining southwest rivers follows after the development of the upper Gordon River 25km to the east of the Franklin.
