It's like an ever-open tap. From the great lakes of East Africa, water is sent northward along the White Nile towards desert regions where it's urgently needed but half of this water will never get there. When it reaches the Sudan the river flows into a huge swamp. Each year an area bigger than the whole of Ireland becomes one vast bog and half the water that goes in evaporates away, it simply disappears.
