500 0# - GENERAL NOTE
General note In the 1850s deer, the first of many species of game animals, were introduced into New Zealand primarily to satisfy the sporting interests of the earlier colonists. As deer numbers multiplied their status underwent dramatic changes, from protected animals to hunted pests, all in less than a hundred years. Today, the helicopter hunters easy access to high peaks and distant valleys keeps numbers under control. For deer, the game park has now become a place of refuge but in the early days of the big herds, hardy government hunters tracked them down on foot. Men like Ron Frazer made up the front line force against the large number of grazing animals causing damage to the stability of the back country. Ron Frazer recalls that "those were the days."
