To the east of New Guinea set in the Solomon Sea lie the coral islands of the Trobriands. For the inhabitants of these islands, the sea is an important part of the economy. It is a source of food and it yields the precious shells which when cut and polished become bracelets and necklaces to be prized and handed on with a history of ownership covering generations.
