To protect him from the elements, man has always had a cave to shelter in. Nowadays our caves are artificial and become increasingly sophisticated. We need caves to live in, to relax in, to house our possessions in, caves to play in, to seek entertainment in. We need caves to make things in and caves to buy and sell them in but they're more than just shelters from the elements. We work best and relax most happily, when we're free of mental and physical discomforts and that is why a large area of building research today is centred on the problem of creating an agreeable indoor climate by the most economical means.
